Why earwax sometimes needs professional intervention
A blocked feeling does not always mean earwax, which is why an examination matters. It may be worth booking an appointment if you notice:

Sounds becoming dull or muffled
A blocked, full, or pressured feeling in the ear
Difficulty hearing with hearing aids that usually work well

A sudden change in hearing clarity
Severe pain, discharge, dizziness, sudden hearing loss or symptoms following an ear injury should be assessed promptly by a GP or other appropriate medical professional.
TREATMENT OPTIONS
Earwax removal, performed by audiologists.
Every appointment begins with an examination of your ear canals. Depending on what we find, the amount and position of wax, and your ear history, your audiologist will explain the most appropriate approach.
Wax softeners
Softening drops or sprays may be recommended before your appointment, particularly when wax is dry or firmly impacted. We will let you know if preparation is appropriate for you.
Microsuction
Microsuction uses gentle suction, under magnification, to remove wax from the ear canal. It can be particularly helpful where wax is deep, compacted or difficult to remove with simpler methods.
Ear irrigation
For suitable ears, controlled irrigation may be used to flush away softened wax. Your audiologist will assess whether this method is appropriate before proceeding.
Manual removal
Specialist instruments may be used to carefully lift or remove wax when appropriate.
Severe pain, discharge, dizziness, sudden hearing loss or symptoms following an ear injury should be assessed promptly by a GP or other appropriate medical professional.

What is microsuction earwax removal?
Microsuction is a professional technique that allows your hearing specialist to view the ear canal under magnification while carefully removing excess or impacted wax using controlled suction. This gives the clinician excellent visibility and control throughout the procedure.
How do I know if earwax is causing my hearing problems
Earwax build-up can cause muffled hearing, blocked or full ears, tinnitus, discomfort and problems with hearing aids.

Is microsuction better than ear syringing?

The $50 price is for clients whose Hearing Services Program care is with Essence Audiology. Everyone else pays $100. Program clients can choose their provider at any time, and moving providers is always your decision and needs your consent.
What happens if the earwax removal does not improve my hearing?
If your ears are clear but your hearing isn't what it should be, we'll explain what we've found and whether further assessment is needed. As a full-service independent hearing care provider, Essence Audiology can provide comprehensive hearing assessments and ongoing hearing care if required.
