UNDERSTANDING EARWAX

Why earwax sometimes needs professional intervention

A blocked feeling does not always mean earwax, which is why an examination matters. It may be worth booking an appointment if you notice:

COMMON SYMPTOMS

Could earwax be affecting your hearing?

The following may be symptoms of an earwax build-up:

  • Sounds becoming dull or muffled

  • A blocked, full, or pressured feeling in the ear

  • Difficulty hearing with hearing aids that usually work well

  • Hearing aids whistling more than usual

  • Itchy ears or mild discomfort

  • Tinnitus seeming more noticeable

  • A sudden change in hearing clarity

Severe pain, discharge, dizziness, sudden hearing loss or symptoms following an ear injury should be assessed promptly by a GP or other appropriate medical professional.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

audiologist from essence audiology performs earwax removal

Earwax removal, performed by audiologists.

Every appointment begins with an examination of your ear canals. Depending on what we find, the amount and position of wax, and your ear history, your audiologist will explain the most appropriate approach.

Wax softeners

Softening drops or sprays may be recommended before your appointment, particularly when wax is dry or firmly impacted. We will let you know if preparation is appropriate for you.

Microsuction

Microsuction uses gentle suction, under magnification, to remove wax from the ear canal. It can be particularly helpful where wax is deep, compacted or difficult to remove with simpler methods.

Ear irrigation

For suitable ears, controlled irrigation may be used to flush away softened wax. Your audiologist will assess whether this method is appropriate before proceeding.

Manual removal

Specialist instruments may be used to carefully lift or remove wax when appropriate.

Severe pain, discharge, dizziness, sudden hearing loss or symptoms following an ear injury should be assessed promptly by a GP or other appropriate medical professional.

If your ears are clear but your hearing still isn't what it

should be, we'll explain what we've found and whether a hearing assessment is worth booking.

KEEP YOUR HEARING AIDS WORKING WELL

Hearing aid performance can be improved by removing earwax

If your hearing aids seem quieter, it could be earwax

Earwax can block sound from reaching your hearing aids properly, cause feedback or whistling, and make devices feel less comfortable. If your hearing aids are not performing as they should, we can check both your ears and your devices.

You do not need to have bought your hearing aids from Essence Audiology to ask us for help.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY

Trusted within all our local communities

See what clients from Albury, Wodonga and surrounding communities say about their experience with Essence Audiology.

Walked in off the street. Just arrived in Albury. Reception staff were courteous and very helpful. Given an appointment the following day with the lady audiologist, who provided excellent advice and service.

No pressure was applied in the choosing of my new hearing aids. After being with one Australian wide company for 15 years, I appreciate now the benefits of the independent advice and excellent service given by Essence Audiology.

Jeanette Klotz

My experience at Essence was great. With other audiologists I was put off by their hard-sell manner, & reluctant to visit an audiologist again. Essence, on the other hand, has been a breath of fresh air. Very professional yet friendly and helpful staff.

I was certainly offered upgrades, but it was done in a helpful, pressure-free manner. The fitting & adjustment of my new hearing aids was also quite an experience, especially how they were able to fine tune them to suit my needs.

My sincere thanks to Essence Albury!

Ray B

I cannot speak highly enough of Caitlin and Sarah. I felt that I was really heard in terms of my hearing needs and barriers I was facing.

Caitlin provided suggestions for improving my hearing in various situations, including work and social environments, and supported my use of technology with some great advice and training. I felt valued and at no point was I coerced into purchasing products I did not need.

At FoH Sarah was friendly, welcoming and helpful. Altogether a very satisfying experience

Alice Glachan

As usual, I found Essence to be extremely good. On my visit for my hearing aid maintenance check, I was treated as a valued client, and they replaced an ear tube and checked my ears for wax, amongst other things.

I can hear quite a bit better now because they found and removed all the wax. Totally happy with the service and attention that I received.

Thanks Essence!

Glenn

Frequently Asked Questions

What is microsuction earwax removal?

Microsuction is a professional technique that allows your hearing specialist to view the ear canal under magnification while carefully removing excess or impacted wax using controlled suction. This gives the clinician excellent visibility and control throughout the procedure.

How do I know if earwax is causing my hearing problems

Earwax build-up can cause muffled hearing, blocked or full ears, tinnitus, discomfort and problems with hearing aids.

However, these symptoms can have other causes. That's one advantage of having your ears treated by Essence Audiology. We're hearing specialists, not simply an earwax removal service

FAQ image

Is microsuction better than ear syringing?

For many people, microsuction is preferred because it does not use water pressure. The clinician can view the ear canal clearly while removing the wax, which allows for a controlled and precise procedure.

Risk of Injury: Inserting objects like cotton swabs or hairpins into your ear can push earwax deeper into the ear canal, potentially causing impaction or damage to the delicate structures of the ear, including the eardrum.

Infections: Improper earwax removal techniques can introduce bacteria into the ear canal, leading to infections. Ear candles, in particular, have been associated with burns and other injuries.

Ineffectiveness: Many home remedies do not effectively remove earwax and can exacerbate the problem by compacting the earwax further. Such actions can lead to more serious blockages that require professional intervention.

Hearing Damage: Pushing earwax further into the ear canal or damaging the ear canal can result in temporary or permanent hearing loss.

Professional Care: Trained audiologists perform professional earwax removal methods, such as microsuction, using specialised equipment.

These methods are safe, effective, and they mitigate the risks associated with home remedies.

To ensure the safety and health of your ears, it is always best to seek professional help for earwax removal. Our earwax removal service using microsuction is a safe, quick, and painless solution performed by experienced audiologists.
